Weight loss surgery program in Thornton

At the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at North Suburban Medical Center, we help severely obese patients achieve their weight loss goals. We give you support before and after your bariatric surgery, so you have the tools you need to lose the weight, keep it off and live the life you want.

For more information about bariatric surgery or to register for our free weight loss surgery seminar, please call (303) 920-4362.

Our weight loss program is designed to educate patients before committing to bariatric surgery, and our team continues to provide support throughout the weight loss process.

We offer the following weight loss procedures, and your weight loss doctor will help determine which may be best for you.

Gastric bypass

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass changes the size of the stomach and bypasses the first part of the small intestine where calories absorption occurs. The smaller stomach pouch restricts food intake, and the bypass stops the body from absorbing as many calories.

Gastric banding

In a gastric band procedure, an adjustable band is placed around the stomach to decrease the amount of food that can pass into the stomach pouch. Your surgeon can adjust the band as needed, and the band is removable.

Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)

The gastric sleeve procedure changes the size and structure of your stomach. The smaller stomach pouch restricts food consumption and allows you to feel fuller with less food.

Frequently asked questions about weight loss surgery

We will provide you all of the tools and experience you need to be successful and meet your weight loss goals, but you will have to work hard on your diet, exercise and lifestyle changes to ensure long-term success.

The amount of weight loss after surgery depends on several factors, including:

  • Overall health (related co-morbidities)
  • Age
  • Weight prior to surgery
  • Adherence to dietary guidelines
  • Motivation
  • Ability to exercise

Clinical studies show that most patients lose weight rapidly and continue to do so for two to five years following surgery. Initially, gastric bypass patients may lose weight at a faster rate than patients undergoing the gastric band procedure. Over time, weight loss will be similar for both surgical procedures.

Not necessarily. When properly treated, mental health conditions, such as depression, do not necessarily interfere with successful weight loss surgery. You should maintain your medications, as recommended by your physician, and seek additional treatment, as needed. We require a psychological condition to be in control for six months prior to surgery.
Preparation for surgery will depend on many factors, including your health history, motivation and insurance provider. If you have attended our free weight loss surgery seminar, please review the "Patient Flow Worksheet" for more details about this process.
All insurance companies are different in their coverage of weight loss surgery, and each policy is different. We will help you understand your benefits and options.
