At a special surprise ceremony, North Suburban Medical Center honored Jennifer Swain, RN, for providing extraordinary patient care by presenting her with the DAISY Award for nursing excellence. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's international program to recognize the compassionate efforts nurses perform every day.

Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues, and they are chosen by a committee of nurses at North Suburban Medical Center to receive The DAISY Award. Swain was nominated directly by one of her patients at North Suburban.

The nomination noted, "I was sick with pneumonia and could not hit a button if I needed something…but [Jen] came to check on me consistently…she is such a kind-hearted soul and defines what a great nurse should be."

The nomination concluded with, "I will never forget the kind, loving care I received at North Suburban from Jen."

Swain is a nurse on the medical/surgical unit, and chose to work at North Suburban following the completion of two clinical rotations.

"You made such an impact on this patient, and you also make a positive impact on your team here at North Suburban. You cared for this patient as if they were your own family member, and that is what nursing is all about," said Angie Voigt, chief nursing officer at North Suburban Medical Center.

Always focused on others, Jen thanked her team members for supporting her each day and making it possible for her to be such a great nurse after she accepted the award.

DAISY Awards are given at presentations in front of the nurse's colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each Honoree receives a certificate commending her or him for being an "Extraordinary Nurse." The certificate reads: "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people." The Honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer's Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

The DAISY Foundation was created in honor of Patrick J. Barnes, who enjoyed cinnamon rolls towards the end of his life, so the DAISY award ceremonies at North Suburban Medical Center include cinnamon rolls as a special nod to his life.

DAISY nominations are accepted in person at North Suburban Medical Center and online at
